HygO is an autonomous energy grid in a compact small format, based on developments in HyTrA and expanded with a water purification module utilizing “dirty-water.” The objectives of HygO are multifaceted and encompass various aspects:

Development and adaptation to the climatic conditions of the (southern) African market

The basic development has already been tailored to the specific requirements of this region to ensure a long lifespan of at least 7 years and address crucial issues regarding storage density, safety, user-friendliness, maintenance-free operation, and energy self-sufficiency.

Strengthening the local economy and job creation

HygO aims to reduce dependence on the raw materials sector and promote sustainable economic development. By establishing value chains locally, jobs in the energy generation sector will be created, with a particular focus on engaging disadvantaged population groups.

Contribution to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

HygO addresses concrete goals of sustainable development, such as ensuring access to affordable and sustainable energy (Goal 7), promoting economic growth and employment (Goal 8), and fostering innovation and infrastructure (Goal 9). The use of microgrids enables reliable power supply in many regions for the first time, making local companies reliable partners in national and international supply chains.

Building partnerships and social integration

HygO aims to collaborate with local businesses, educational institutions, and government authorities to promote understanding of renewable energies and support social integration. By creating jobs and strengthening the local industry, positive impacts on the community are intended.

HygO aims to achieve specific Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy (Goal 7) and promoting economic growth and employment (Goal 8). By using microgrids and renewable energies, an environmentally friendly energy supply is enabled, and local supply chains are established, contributing to long-term sustainable development.

Achieving climate-neutral energy supply is a global goal, particularly crucial in regions with high solar irradiation, such as Africa and Namibia. HygO offers a comprehensive approach to utilizing renewable energies and providing clean drinking water, not only protecting the environment but also creating economic opportunities. The planned approach addresses the specific needs and challenges of the region, contributing to economic stability and improved living conditions.

By integrating climate protection aspects with economic development, HygO will have a collective effect on positively integrating hydrogen into the region. The holistic concept aims to open up new market segments and strengthen local businesses. The establishment of the biotope in Windhoek serves as a showcase for the technologies and activates entrepreneurs on-site, leading to economic stability and long-term prospects for the region.

HygO faces various risks, including potential challenges in data collection for water treatment and in producing the microgrid system above the price level. However, these risks are addressed through comprehensive risk assessments and management measures to ensure the successful implementation of the project.
